Many positions require employees to annually earn unscheduled inservice credit.  See this article to find out which positions require unscheduled credits, what types of activities are approved for professional learning, and how much is required. Unscheduled inservice credit must be earned by May 1 of each year.

Frontline is the official record of earned unscheduled inservice credit.

How do I locate professional learning opportunities?

  • Check with your school. Many opportunities will be offered at the school level outside of contract time.
  • Search Frontline Professional Growth.  Frontline holds the catalog of professional learning opportunities that are being offered throughout the district.
  • Locate opportunities outside our district.

How do I register for activities?

  • If you are participating in a school-based activity, someone at your school will likely create an activity in Frontline.  Attendees may be asked to register for the school-based activity in Frontline, or the activity's organizer may enter attendance in Frontline after the event.

  • If you are participating in an activity that is posted in Frontline, you will follow the registration process in Frontline.
    • If the activity is synchronous (a live meeting held either in person or through Teams), note the meeting dates and times, and return to the event in Frontline if you need additional information about the activity.
      • If the meeting is conducted via Teams, you will find the link to the meeting in the Frontline activity posting.
    • If the activity is asynchronous (a self-paced course typically accessed through Canvas), you will find the link to the Canvas course in the Frontline activity posting.  Participants engage with learning activities and submit assignments in Canvas to show their understanding of the content.
    • You must sign up for the activity in Frontline and use the link in the activity posting to join the Canvas course.

With Teams links and Canvas links, copy them and paste them into your browser's search bar.

  • If you are participating in an activity that is being offered by an agency outside of  KCS (EX:  Professional organization conference), you must complete a request for “Out of District Credit”.
  • This must be submitted and approved before you attend the event.
  • If an event is approved, you will open your request in Frontline, and click “Manage”.  From there you will mark that your participation in the event is complete.
  • Approval of an out of district activity does not indicate that KCS will pay any fees associated with the event.

How is credit awarded?

  • For synchronous sessions held in person or in Teams, the activity's owner will take attendance and award credit in Frontline.

  • For asynchronous activities carried out in Canvas, the instructor will grade the assignments within the course and award credit to participants who meet the criteria set by the instructor.  EX:  An instructor may require that participants score 80% or better to earn credit.  An instructor may require that participants complete 100% of the assignments.
    • The instructor will provide the requirements of the course along with a date when the course closes and all assignments are locked.

When is credit awarded?

  • Credit for synchronous sessions offered in person or through Teams usually posts a few days after the session.  If you do not see your credit posted after one week, reach out to the activity owner.  This person will be listed in Frontline.

  • Credit for asynchronous activities is usually posted after the course's end date.  The instructor must grade all the submissions in Canvas and then enter the credit in Frontline.
  • Canvas and Frontline do not communicate.  The instructor will manually check credit earned in Canvas and record the credit in Frontline.
  • If you do not see your credit posted after one week, reach out to the activity owner.  This person will be listed in Frontline and within the Canvas course.

How do I check my credit status?

The “Viewing Your Portfolio” section of this document demonstrates how to see the hours you have earned and the status of credit that may be in progress.

How does KCS know that I have fulfilled my responsibility to earn unscheduled inservice credit?

After May 1, supervisors will check each employee's portfolio in Frontline.  This will indicate whether or not you have earned the amount of hours required for your position and contract.

Where can I ask questions about earning unscheduled inservice hours?

  • Begin with your immediate supervisor. They may be able to answer your questions.
  • If you need further assistance, please email professionaldevelopment@knoxschools.org.
